| 520 | _aAt the close of the year 1880, the editor Robert Sewell was commissioned by the Government of Madras to prepare for the then proposed Archaeological Survey of Southern India lists of all the known antiquities and inscriptions in the Madras Presidency. In connection with that duty the editor compiled Vols. I and II of the Archaeological Survey Series. From the commencement of his labours the editor had formed the design of adding to Vol. II a thoroughly accurate set of chronological tables, which should enable students of history readily to convert into European reckoning the date of any inscription in Southern India. The present volume is the result of the encouragement given by Government partly to this scheme, and partly to a scheme for providing better chronological tables for the use of the law courts. | ||
