In September 2015, member countries of the United Nations came together to adopt ‘Agenda 2030’ with seventeen Sustainable Development Goals and 169 Indicators. This is the most comprehensive and ambitious global development agenda in the history of humanity. Importance of local governments in achieving these goals has been recognized by the United Nations and also by local government associations. In India, approximately 68 per cent of population lives in rural areas and any effort to localize SDGs brings Gram Panchayats, village level local governments, in focus. This book makes an effort to understand the specific role Gram Panchayats can play in attainment of twelve identified SDGs.
